After weeks on his desk, Governor Brad Little signed House Bill 109 that could remove candy and soda from SNAP eligibility. Under the bill, the state will now request a waiver from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to make the changes. Soda pop is the number one item bought with food stamps.
As he signed the bill, Governor Little reiterated Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr’s words “We need to take better care of ourselves and each other.” He went on to say “…it is an act of patriotism and the future of our nation depends on it. Idaho couldn’t agree more.”
Secretary Kennedy responded, saying “I urge all governors to follow Idaho’s lead and submit innovative SNAP waivers to the USDA to reverse the childhood chronic disease epidemic and Make America Healthy Again.”
