The Asotin County Sheriff says local seniors are being targeted by a new scam. It involves people pretending to be calling from the Department of Veterans Affairs. For some, they also claim to be from Medicare, Social Security, or a supplemental insurance. Really, they’re looking for you to disclose your private financial information.
The trick is that they say they’re sending new benefits cards and your file has to be updated. That’s when they ask for your banking information. The Sheriff’s Office says the caller can get very aggressive, calling over and over, and at all times of the day to wear you down. Sometimes they’ll say they already have some of the information to seem legitimate.
They say you should just hang up as soon as they ask for your financial info.
