Washington State Attorney General Nick Brown has joined a multi-state lawsuit. The suit challenges the recent federal government cuts to AmeriCorps. It terminates grants and reduced the agency’s workforce by 85%.

Locally, it impacts the Palouse-Clearwater Environmental Institute. They’ll be forced to end four contracts this month instead of in August.

So far there are 23 attorneys general and the states of Kentucky and Pennsylvania involved in the suit.

In a press release, Attorney General Brown says “…the president thinks public programs and public dollars are his to do with what he will, snatching them up through the same scheming that federal courts have already said is likely illegal.”

Brown says the cuts violate both the Administrative Procedures Act and the separation of powers under the U.S. Constitution.

Oregon state has also joined the suit. At the time of writing, Idaho is not part of it.
