Fire Restrictions Take Effect Thursday on BLM Land

Starting Thursday (May 14th), you won’t be allowed to use items that are common for starting wildfires on Bureau of Land Management property. That includes fireworks, exploding targets, metallic targets, steel component ammunition, tracers, incendiary devices, and sky lanterns. BLM leaders say the restrictions help reduce the risk of human-caused fires.

In a press release, U.S. Wildland Fire Service Assistant Chief of Operations Jeff Fedrizzi says they are “increasingly concerned that 2026 could rival the most extreme years on record for heat and dryness in the Pacific Northwest…even one small spark can lead to a costly and destructive fire in these high-impact conditions.”

Anyone violating the prohibition can be fined up to $100,000 and imprisoned for 12 months. Anyone found responsible for starting wildland fires on federal land can be billed for the cost to put it out.
