Clearwater County Solid Waste says costs have more than doubled since the last fee adjustment to customers. That was five years ago. They released the information in a letter on the county’s Facebook page. It says things are going to get worse. In January, the cost to dump the waste at other counties’ landfills will go up 25%.
They went on to say the Transfer Station operates on the fees they collect, and the current rates don’t cover the rising costs. They previously shipped garbage to the Asotin County Landfill, but due to recent restrictions, they now take it all the way to Missoula.
The letter says they’re working toward a more sustainable long-term solution, but it says “…a fee increase is necessary.” There’s no word yet on when fees will increase.
