If you want to sell meat that didn’t come from an animal, you’ll have to be sure to label it properly in Idaho. The Governor signed Senate Bill 1270 yesterday (Tues) that requires producers to make it obvious that it’s “lab-grown”, “cultivated”, “cell-cultured”, or “fake” meat.
Under Idaho law, packaging and menus will have to use a font size and style that ensures legibility and is at least equal in prominence to the product name.
The products will not be allowed to be called traditional meat cut names like “steak,” “roast,” or “brisket”, unless authorized by the U.S. department of agriculture.
Penalties include up to $500 per package. Enforcement will hit the producer or package labeler, not the retailer, unless the retailer or restaurant altered the packaging.
The new law takes effect July 1st.
