New Law Requires Probable Cause To Board a Boat

A new law in Idaho requires law enforcement officers to have probable cause to get on your boat. Currently, deputies and other officers can stop you on the water and search your boat without needing a reason. The writers of House Bill 548 say it “restores your Fourth Amendment rights while on the water.”

The bill adds the words “upon reasonable suspicion that a violation has occurred” to the sentence “…authority may stop and board any vessel subject to law.”

Governor Little signed it yesterday (Thurs). It takes effect July 1st.
