Idaho Fish and Game killed three wolves last week in northern Idaho. A press release says it’s the “first time such actions have been implemented in Idaho’s Panhandle Region.” They removed the wolves from Unit 4, east of Coeur d’Alene.
The release goes on to say they’re working to promote elk population growth in the area. This action, along with recent success of local trappers, has “substantially reduced” a wolf pack in a key part of the unit.
Recent data has shown Fish and Game that elk numbers in the area have declined and wolf predation on calves is a contributing factor.
Fish and Game says they prioritize hunting and trapping as the primary tools for managing wolf populations, but targeted control actions like this are used to address specific conflicts to meet management goals.
