The Lewiston Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 400 block of Preston Avenue at about 5:30 this (Fri) morning.

According to a news release, arriving crews found a two story apartment complex with residents standing in the parking lot. Crews were directed to an apartment on the main floor and made entry to find smoke and heat from a stove top fire that was quickly extinguished.

Firefighters remained on scene to check for extension and smoke evacuation. The other apartments were cleared and residents were allowed to return to the unaffected units. Fire department officials say the residents of the affected apartment did a great job of closing doors behind them as they evacuated to seal the fire at its source and notify the residents of the other apartments to evacuate.

The department responded with three structural engines, two ambulances and one chief officer for a total of 14 personnel.

The cause of the fire was determined to be from unattended cooking on the stove top. Damage estimates to the structure and contents were approximately $5,000.

There were no firefighter or civilian injuries reported.
