The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is investigating an outbreak of botulism linked to powdered infant formula.
The Washington State Department of Health reports 13 infants in 10 states have been involved in the outbreak, including one in western Washington.
The formula being recalled is ByHeart Whole Nutrition Infant Fomula. The Health Department says if you have recently bought some, you should throw it away or return it where you bought it. They recommend you check the lot number on the container before throwing it away. Then you should wash any items and surfaces that may have touched the formula using hot soapy water or a dishwasher.
If your infant has consumed the formula you should go to your medical provider if your baby has poor feeding, loss of head control, difficulty swallowing, or decreased facial expression.
Symptoms of infant botulism can take as long as several weeks to develop.
