Kootenai County Sheriff’s Deputy Killed in UTV Crash near Elk River

A deputy with the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office was killed following a UTV accident in Clearwater County.

According to a social media post from the Clearwater County Sheriff’s Office, on Friday morning at about 1:40 a.m. the sheriff’s office received a report of an overdue person on a UTV near Elk River. Deputies responded along with Search and Rescue and began searching for the person.

The search covered a very large area from Elk River to Dworshak reservoir and included searchers in pickups, UTV’s, a drone and the Back Country Medics Helicopter. Searchers talked to several other hunters that were camped in the area and several of them assisted in the search.

The missing UTV was found at about noon near the South Fork of Robinson Creek by hunters that had volunteered to help. The operator and sole occupant was located deceased near the UTV. The UTV had rolled down off an old logging road and the operator was ejected.

The victim was identified as 43-year-old Dale Law, an off-duty deputy with the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office.
