The Lewiston Police Department is alerting the public to a recent rise in fraudulent “kidnapping” scam robo-calls targeting local residents.
According to a news release from LPD, in these cases, victims receive an automated or live call claiming a loved one – often a child—has been kidnapped. The caller demands money be sent immediately, often through wire transfer, mobile payment apps, or gift cards. The calls are designed to create fear and urgency in order to trick victims into complying.
No actual kidnappings have been linked to these calls. The scammers frequently use caller ID “spoofing” to make the call appear as though it is coming from a local or trusted number and they often discourage victims from contacting law enforcement or family members.
LPD says if you receive one of these calls, to stay calm and do not provide personal or financial information. Attempt to contact the family member directly to confirm their safety and report the call immediately to the Lewiston Police Department at 208-746-0171, or if you feel you are in immediate danger, call 911.
