The Washington State Fire Marshal’s office is sending out a reminder that vehicle fires happen fairly frequently. In fact, in the United States, they accounted for about 16% of reported fires between 2018 and 2022. Locally, we’ve had several in the last few weeks. One in Lewiston at the theater, one outside of Clarkston at Golf Course Pond, and one just yesterday in Orofino when a motor home’s brakes caught fire and it spread to a nearby RV.
Last year in Washington, three people died from vehicle fires.
In the event your vehicle catches fire while you’re driving, the Deputy Fire Marshal recommends you quickly pull over, turn off the engine, have everyone get out and regroup at least 100 feet away from the vehicle, call 911, and continue to stay away from the vehicle.
