Lapwai Days kicked off with a movie in the park last night (Thurs). This morning the park had a few people moving through, but one group of women was excited to see how to make a Tipi. Andre Picard with the Nez Perce Tribe Child Support Program taught them how with a group of poles and a canvas cover. The Tipi Race encourages people to learn how to build one, then see how fast they can put it together and take it apart. Picard says it was important to the Nez Perce to be able to move quickly in the face of wildfire or approaching enemies. He says the Lapwai Fire Department has one of the best times in recent memory. It took them about 10 minutes to put it up and take it down.
If you’d like to learn how and then test yourself, everyone is welcome. He’ll be there until 5pm today (Friday) in the park. There’s no need to call ahead, you can just grab some friends or come alone and show up.
