Idaho Republican Congressman Mike Simpson has cosponsored House Resolution 3699 – the Energy Choice Act.
The legislation would prohibit states or local governments from banning an energy service’s connection, reconnection, modification, installation, or expansion based on the type or source of energy to be delivered. The measure is sponsored by New York Republican Representative Nick Langworthy.
In a news release, Simpson says “energy freedom is key to strengthening our domestic energy supply and ensuring Americans have access to reliable sources that best meet their needs.” He added that “the Energy Choice Act will lower prices in the long run while defending consumer choice against those politicians working to ban certain types of energy.”
According to the news release, the bill would ensure housing costs do not needlessly rise by preventing state and local governments from banning the use of natural gas energy in new homes and reducing choices on how consumers heat and cool their homes.
West Virginia Republican U.S. Senator Jim Justice has introduced companion legislation in the Senate.
