If you’re headed to Boise any time before fall, plan for delays. The Rainbow Bridge on Highway 55 is now under construction. It’s planned to be replaced in 2029, but until then, Idaho Transportation Department is having repairs done to keep it safe.
The project starts today (Monday). Traffic will be down to one lane. River traffic underneath will also be affected. A river flagger will hold rafters upstream until it’s safe to pass under the bridge.
The last time work was done on the bridge was nearly 20 years ago in 2006. They’re repairing concrete elements, replacing expansion joints, and repairing the deck surface.
Work will take all summer. It’s not expected to be done before fall.
