The ruling board of Washington school athletics voted down two hot-button amendments at their assembly yesterday.
The Washington Interscholastic Athletics Association had 16 amendments up for vote. They passed seven.
Two that failed involved trans athletes. One would have limited girls’ sports to biological females. 31 representatives out of 53 supported it, but it needed one more vote to pass. The other was to offer athletic programs separately for boys, girls, and an open division for all students. It also failed.
The WIAA website says these would not have changed Washington state law. They would have just been “Advisory Votes”.
An increase of 25% to membership fees also failed.
One amendment of note that did pass was the creation of girls’ flag football as a high school sport. It does not require the creation at all high schools, they just have the option now.
