The Lewiston City Council has unanimously voted to extend the Local Disaster Emergency, initially declared by Mayor Dan Johnson on June 14.
This continuance comes in response to the torrential downpour and resulting widespread flooding that occurred on June 9, and the continued efforts being made to address damage sustained during that event. The Nez Perce County Commissioners have also signed a resolution in support of the City’s emergency declaration.
The purpose of the continuance is to enable the city to continue seeking local and intergovernmental assistance from Governor Brad Little’s Office. The city continues to collect supporting information to better support a possible declaration by the Governor and is working closely with The Idaho Office of Emergency Management to meet any additional requirements for a state declaration.
The intense thunderstorm unleashed a deluge of rain, resulting in immediate and severe consequences, including substantial damage to roads and public infrastructure, hindering transportation, and necessitating road closures. The city also experienced significant flooding of roadways and drainage systems due to overwhelming amounts of debris.
City staff have been addressing areas of immediate concern using available resources. However, due to the severity of the damage, additional resources will be required in certain areas.
