NEW YORK, NY – A department-wide recall of 9 mm ammunition manufactured in the Lewis-Clark Valley has been issued by the New York Police Department. According to the New York Daily News, it was reportedly discovered that a very small, specific lot number of bullets made by Speer were failing to fire properly during training at the firing range. There were no reported injuries and none of the bullets were discharged in public.

Speer is part of Vista Outdoor, an outdoor sports and recreation company; the Lewiston-based company manufactures a variety of bullets and cartridges for law enforcement, reloading, and sporting applications.

“We have been contacted by our long-time customer NYPD and are working with them to ensure the ammunition they have is top quality. There is no Speer product recall,” according to Brian Kelvington, Director of Media Relations with Vista Outdoor.

In July 2018, the NYPD awarded Speer with a long-term contract for its 124-grain, 9mm Luger +P Gold Dot Duty ammunition. This five-year contract was worth up to $18 million according to a press release at the time.

The Daily News reported that the recall was issued on January 5th and all officers who received 9 mm ammo from the department since December 19th were ordered to return them for a new supply of bullets.

In 1996, Speer became one of the first U.S. ammunition manufacturers to achieve ISO 9001 certification for quality.
