A wind-driven grass fire burned two structures Tuesday evening near Tammany Creek Road south of the Lewiston Orchards before being contained by fire crews.

The blaze, located west of the Lewiston Roundup Grounds, started a bit before 6 p.m., according to Lapwai Fire Chief Bill Skiles. It was thought to have been started by sparks from someone welding, Skiles said. The fire moved quickly and grew large at times. One dog died in the fire, but livestock in the area was saved. A few hours after it started, the fire was considered contained, but crews were staying on the scene to monitor it.

Lapwai Fire, Nez Perce County Fire and Wheatland Fire responded to the blaze, as did some construction crews and farmers in the area. (Lewiston Tribune)
