If you’ve been through downtown Lewiston lately, you’ve probably seen the teal ribbons tied to light posts. The YWCA put them up to recognize Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The effort includes several events. Tonight is a free self-defense class at 6pm. Wednesday the’re honoring Denim Day. If you drive down Main Street, you’ll see jeans hanging from the building. The YWCA’s Rebecca Pendergrass says it’s designed to make you ask questions.

Those are trying to get people into our building so we can talk about our services and why we denim on Wednesday to support our survivors.”

In 1992, the Italian Supreme Court overturned a rape ruling stating the woman must have given consent because she was wearing tight jeans that she had to have helped take off. Local law enforcement agencies will also be recognizing the day by wearing jeans.

You can find facts about Sexual Assault Awareness Month on coffee cups at shops around the LC Valley. River City Coffee in Lewiston is also making teal-colored drinks to recognize the event.
