A new law would make it illegal to call lab-grown meat by traditional names like “steak”, “roast”, or “brisket”. Senate Bill 1270 makes it illegal to try to pass off meat not gown in an animal as the real thing.

In a store, it would have to be labeled “lab-grown protein”, “cell-cultivated protein”, cell-cultured protein”, or “alternative animal protein”. The bill says one of those terms would have to be at least equal in font size and prominence to the product name itself. In a restaurant, it would have to be clearly labeled on the menu.

The penalty would be up to $500 per package that was labeled incorrectly. If it passes and the Governor signs it, the law will go into effect on July 1st.
