Washington Bill To “Modernize” Requirements For Sheriffs

wa-legislature-sb5974

In the recent wake of Sheriffs standing up to what they feel are illegal laws, Washington Senate Bill 5974 would require Sheriffs to enforce state laws, and not just uphold the U.S. Constitution. It also applies to Police Chiefs, Town Marshals, and similar law enforcement leaders.

The bill claims “existing law is in part outdated and inconsistent with current values and practices”.

The way the law is right now, the only requirement to be Sheriff once elected, is to pass academy training in 12 months. The bill aims to require Sheriffs to ”uphold and enforce the Washington state Constitution and laws”, and not just the U.S. Constitution.
