A group of volunteers is working diligently to fix the Welcome To Friendly Asotin sign. The greeting that stood as you enter town off the highway was taken down when someone wrote “Kill Trump” in spray paint last week. Now some people from Harvest Church in Clarkston are scrubbing, sanding, and touching up the sign, to get it ready to welcome drivers again.
Pastor David Pfinster says there’s “a lot of detail” in the sign that requires a gentle touch at times. He says the original was done with a lot of expert talent and they’re working to make sure they “preserve the original history” of the sign. He notes the steamboat that used to be parked in Asotin is on the sign, and they were worried it would have to be repainted, but they were able to get the red spray paint off without damaging the original. The colors in the word “Asotin” were painted to look dimensional and he says that’s taking a lot of work to make sure it stays looking just like it used to.
Pfinster says the volunteers are putting in hours whenever they can, and he hopes to have it done by the end of November.
Police Chief Monte Renzelman says he’s still looking for the criminal and he’s happy to chat with anyone who may have a lead. If you saw someone doing it or if you know anything about it, you can call the city at 509-243-4411.
