| LEWISTON, Idaho – The Warrior women love to play at home, and it was evident on Tuesday when LC State Women’s Golf and Giulia Belfontali repeated as team and individual champions at The Warrior Fall Invitational. The Warriors took the team title convincingly while Belfontali pushed her day to a playoff for her second individual crown.
LC State won by 22 strokes over No. 20 Oregon Tech after rounds of 313-298 for a 35-over total. Belfontali, Dallis Shockey and Taylor Mire each earned all-tournament honors.
“A great day for the Warrior women,” coach Zach Anderson said. “A very well put together team round. Lots of small things that we did right that led to a huge win for our team, all capped off by Giulia winning in a playoff. It was a very impressive comeback round for her. Two straight home event wins for not just our team, but also Giulia. This group has grown together more and more over the past few years, and it was great to see the chemistry they showed in that celebration at the end. Overall, this fall was full of ups and downs but lots of individual growth that will help catapult us into the spring. The opportunity for this team to be a national contender grows every year and weeks like this show we are making the necessary things to continue that climb.”
Belfontali shot the only under-par round of the women’s tournament with a 71 on Tuesday. She surged from a tie for sixth to tie for first with College of Idaho’s Reece Garey at the end of regulation before a playoff win on hole 18. The sophomore, who won The Warrior Spring Classic last season, carded three birdies and only two bogies in her final round for her second collegiate victory.
Shockey and Mire tied for third at 9-over after two rounds. Shockey carded a 74 to wrap up the fall which tied for the second-best round of the week and Mire fired off a 76 in her final 18 holes.
Meanwhile, the LC State Men’s Golf team ended the fall portion of the season with a second-place finish at The Warrior Fall Invitational. Luke West, Lucas Ortega and Sondre Andresen each finished in the top five to earn all-tournament honors.
The Warriors finished 10 strokes back of Oregon Tech at 5-over, 581, as a team after rounds of 291-290. The LC State B team was fifth at 21-over, 597, and finished ahead of Simpson (Calif.), Walla Walla (Wash.) and Providence (Mont.).
“Not what we wanted this tournament,” coach Zach Anderson said. “On our home course we really struggled to achieve our goal of winning on our home turf. Frustrating is the word I would use to characterize this week. Overall, it was a decent fall with lots of positives. We will take a much-needed break and dive into the off-season knowing we need to switch some things up be the team we want to be in the spring.”
West used a round of 1-under, 71, to finish 1-under for the tournament at 143. The junior led LC State with a tie for third individually in the field of 46 after four birdies in his final round of the fall.
Ortega and Andresen tied for fifth at even-par, 144. Ortega shot 71-73 over the two rounds and Andresen went 73-71. Ortega carded four birdies in his final 18 holes while Andresen was consistent with two birdies to just one bogey.
Both LC State Golf teams will return to action in the spring.
