The Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forest is tentatively planning prescribed fire operations this week, pending all required approvals. Officials estimate the work to continue through October 5th as weather conditions allow.

Prescribed fires help reduce overgrown vegetation to help protect local communities, infrastructure and natural resources from wildfires. Two prescribed fires are being implemented to remove and clear debris from previous timber harvest and prepare the units for tree planting in the Spring of 2026.

Prescribed fires planned for the area include the Tinker Bugs Timber Sale – encompassing 136 acres located near Forest Service Road #286. Short duration smoke impacts may be possible near Forest Service Roads 286, 286-A, 653, 470, and U.S. Highway 12.

The FanBit Timber Sale – includes 75 acres located in the Fan and Trout Creek drainages near Forest Service Roads 100 and 5107. No significant smoke impacts are expected, however those areas may close to the public for several days for public safety. Officials say visitors to the areas should watch for warning signs along roads near all prescribed fire areas before and during burns.
