High winds across the region Wednesday contributed to several wildfires in Asotin County and neighboring areas, keeping fire crews busy into the night.

An Asotin County Fire broke out just after 11:00 p.m. along Highway 12, approximately 10 miles west of Clarkston. The wind-driven blaze prompted a swift response from Asotin County Fire District #1, with additional support from Lewiston Fire Department, Clarkston Fire Department, Asotin Fire Department, and Wheatland Fire District.

Firefighters quickly contained the fire, but crews remained on scene into early this (Thur) morning to extinguish hot spots in dense brush and wooded areas.

Earlier in the day, Asotin County firefighters responded to two separate wildland fires — one off Knottgrass Road and another near Valentine Ridge in Garfield County. Both were successfully contained.

Meanwhile, a large wind-driven wildfire also erupted off Highway 127 in Whitman County. That fire continued to grow Wednesday afternoon.

There were no reported injuries associated with any of the fires in Asotin or Garfield counties. The causes of the fires remain under investigation.
