Yesterday afternoon, Garfield County Fire District rushed to the east side of Alpowa for a grass fire. It started while two crews from Pomeroy were in Asotin County helping with the Evans Rd Fire. They left to join the other Garfield County wildland resources sent to keep the fire from getting out of control.
Fire Chief James Cleveland says there were high winds, but they were lucky because much of the grass was still green. They did have to drop some trees to keep it from spreading.
Crews were there until about 11:00 last night, then some went back this morning to make sure any hot spots were still under control. Firefighters kept the blaze to about two acres.
