GREENWOOD, Ind. – Charlie Updegrave continued to make history for Lewis-Clark State College Baseball on Tuesday as the fifth CSC Academic All-American ever in the program. The power hitter, who graduated with his degree in kinesiology, wrapped up his four-year career this spring.

The honor marks the first time that LC State Baseball has had a student-athlete voted a CSC Academic All-American in consecutive years. Brandon Cabrera and Carter Booth became the first duo to earn the honor in the same year last season. Updegrave is the fifth Warrior to earn the award and the third with first-team designation.

“Congratulations to Charlie for this great accomplishment,” coach Jeremiah Robbins said. “He has represented Warrior Athletics both on and off the field at a very high level. Also, a special thank you to our faculty for pushing our student-athletes to achieve academic success. Go Warriors.”

Updegrave made Cascade Conference history this season when he became the all-time leader in home runs in the conference. With a Cascade-leading 21 home runs this season, the senior finished with 46 in his career, which is a CCC record. He led the CCC in RBI (72) and total bases (164). The senior led the Warriors in hits (82), doubles (19) and slugging percentage (.450) and batting average (.376). He was one of two Warriors to start all 52 games this season. Updegrave was voted First-Team All-Cascade Conference and a Second-Team NAIA All-American.

The left-handed hitter ranks eighth in single-season home runs and fourth in a career. His 175 RBI in his career ranks seventh. He maintained a 3.55 grade-point average during his time at LC State.

“I am honored to receive this award, especially behind my former teammates Carter Booth and Brandon Cabrera,” Updegrave said. “Being a student-athlete comes with handfuls of responsibility and management; I wouldn’t have been able to achieve such an award without the endless support and motivation from the professors in the kinesiology department of LC State. Also, thank you to the LC State Baseball coaching staff for pushing me past my limits. Lastly, thank you to Coach Robbins, who built me to the player and man I am today, without him I never would have been in the position I am today.”

Updegrave was named to the CSC Academic All-District team in June and advanced to the CSC Academic All-America ballot. To be named CSC Academic All-District, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore in standing and maintain at least a 3.50 cumulative grade-point average. Student-athletes must compete in 90 percent of the institution’s games/contests played or must start in at least 66 percent of the institution’s games/contests.

Updegrave was one of three CCC honorees on the list along with Oregon Tech’s Tyler Horner and Patrick Barry. Horner was voted the CSC NAIA Academic All-America Team Member of the Year.
