Wait at least 15 to 20 minutes before throwing away your fireworks. The Washington State Fire Marshal released a list of things to keep in mind this Independence Day. Two of the items are pretty standard. First, keep a water source nearby, and second, clean up all your used fireworks and the debris. The Fire Marshal recommends you let the used ones cool for a minimum of 15 minutes before you throw them away, and then put them in a metal garbage can.
You might consider tossing them in a bucket of water, but moisture can cause unintended chemical reactions in some fireworks. The Marshal recommends you only dunk fireworks if they have misfired, are visibly damaged, or are on fire.
