A new study shows Washingtonians offer up more on tips while eating out than Idahoans.  The results from Lending Tree show Washington is 6th in the nation for most tipping away from home on food, while Idahoans spend the 3rd least amount.  They define eating away from home to include restaurants, fast food, drinking establishments, hotels, and vending machines.

The most recent numbers are from 2023.  They show that Americans spent more than $77 billion on tips that year.  Full service restaurant tips make up 15.02% of all money spent on food away from homes.  The government data that went into the study shows there are vending machines where people offered up tips.

New Hampshire residents spent 16.07% on tips, the highest in the nation.  People from Utah spent the least at 4.09%.

Washingtonians average 9.51% on all tips, while Idahoans spent 5.10%.  Oregonians come in close to the middle at 6.38%.

Washington residents spend an average of $4,182 eating out each year.  That’s #10 most spent in the nation.  Idaho comes in way down the list at #38 with an average of $3,111 annually.
