Unsecured loads led to 337 crashes in Washington State last year. The State Patrol is going to be watching closely with emphasis patrols the next three weekends to try to bring those numbers down.
This is the fifth year of this campaign with the departments of Ecology and Transportation.
Last year troopers contacted more than 5,300 people and cited 532 of them for unsecured loads.
The fines in Washington range from $50 to $5,000 with higher penalties if the incident results in injury or damage.
The Washington State law says “No person may operate on any public highway any vehicle with any load unless the load and such covering…is securely fastened to prevent the covering or load from becoming loose, detached, or in any manner a hazard to other users of the highway.”
