All of our local Washington counties are on a list as defying federal law. Homeland Security has released a list of places all over the nation that are considered “Sanctuary Jurisdiction” for illegal aliens, and are therefore in violation.
Executive Order 14287: Protecting American Communities from Criminal Aliens requires that a list of states and local areas that obstruct the enforcement of federal immigration laws be published.
We spoke with Asotin County Sheriff John Hilderbrand who hadn’t heard the news that the county was violating federal law. He says he hasn’t been notified by anyone. Hilderbrand says it’s likely because the county is in Washington State, where there are “Keep Washington Working” laws that the current federal government doesn’t like. He says he is required to follow Washington laws, and says “I’ll do what I need to do to keep my citizens safe.”
Garfield County with its 2,363 citizens is also on the list, and so is Whitman County. No local cities are named specifically, but in Idaho, only the city of Boise made the violator’s list.
Homeland Security’s website says the list “…was created to identify sanctuary jurisdictions, which are determined by factors like compliance with federal law enforcement, information restrictions, and legal protections for illegal aliens.”
