Local firefighters are gearing up for wildfire season. Crews from Asotin County Fire District 1, City of Asotin, Clarkston, and Whitman County Fire District 14 spent time Saturday together training. They worked on teamwork, line construction, apparatus use, and fire shelter deployment.

Fire weather forecasts show dryer-than-normal conditions this season.

ACFD Assistant Chief Paul Wik has been teaching about 20 local firefighters the basics in wildland fire fighting. When done, they’ll have a certification in the basics of fighting a wildland or grass fire.

Chief Noel Hardin said safety and teamwork are key when attacking a wildland fire. He said it is hot, arduous work and crews need to look out for each other at all times.
