“Consumers have a right to know if their internet-connected ‘smart’ appliance is recording them unknowingly.” That’s a statement from Idaho’s U.S. Congressman Russ Fulcher about refrigerators, and other appliances that are getting smarter. His bill, House Resolution 859, would require manufacturers to clearly communicate to customers whether their product transmits photographed, filmed, or recorded data.
It would not apply to phones, tablets, laptops, or other devices you’d reasonably expect to have a camera.
There’s a senate companion bill working its way through introduced by Ted Cruz and Washington State’s Maria Cantwell.
