LCSC Name Change Possible This Week to “University”

Lewiston State Normal School changed its name eventually to Lewis-Clark State Collge, and that may soon also be a thing of the past. LCSC may soon be LCSU. The State Board of Education meets Wednesday and Thursday to vote on the change among other things.

In the agenda before the board, it says the change is to remove confusion of the size because it’s lumped in with the four other colleges in Idaho that are community colleges, while LCSC offers more, including graduate degrees. It says ”LC State is the only four-year comprehensive state institution using the label “college.” This causes persistent confusion with the public and various stakeholder groups…” it lists those groups as legislators, business and industry, prospective students, and more. Because of that, it says LCSC is often thought of as a two-year institution.

They expect the cost to change signage would be less than $50-thousand, and would be done during the normal replacement schedule.

Here’s a history of LCSC’s name:

1899 – Named Lewiston State Normal School
1947 – Re-named North Idaho College of Education
1955 – Re-named Lewis-Clark Normal School
1971 – Re-named Lewis-Clark State College
