The Nez Perce County Sheriff’s Office is alerting the public of another scam in the area.

According to a news release, a citizen was contacted by a person claiming to be from the sheriff’s office and left a message. The caller stated their name was Sergeant Wilson and that they were from the warrant division at the Nez Perce County Sheriff’s Office. The caller stated they were reaching out in regards to an important legal matter and requested a call back. The Nez Perce County Sheriff’s Office does not have a warrants division or a Sergeant Wilson among its staff.

The sheriff’s office is also reminding the public that during tax season, scams may be on the rise. The public is advised to always be cautious when talking to someone on the phone. Scammers are able to clone numbers to make it seem like the call is actually coming from a law enforcement office.

No law enforcement agency will ever call and tell you that you have a warrant. Additionally, authorities never ask for payments through gift cards, crypto currency, or any other method. People can always hang up and call the sheriff’s office directly to verify the legitimacy of any contact with someone claiming to be with the department.
