Corporal Gurney, representing the Mountain Pacific Region, was nominated for his courageous actions on January 4, 2024, when he risked his life to prevent a catastrophic wrong-way collision on Interstate 86. During a high-speed pursuit involving an impaired driver going against traffic, Corporal Gurney put his life on the line by strategically hitting the suspect head-on with his patrol vehicle to stop the suspect, absorbing the impact and ultimately preventing what could have been a multiple-fatality crash. Despite sustaining damage to his vehicle, he exited and assisted in the suspect’s apprehension.

The IACP will honor Corporal Gurney and three other regional finalists at the annual IACP Division Midyear Meeting, where the 2024 IACP/Motorola Solutions Trooper of the Year will be announced.
