There have been many rumors as to whether the Latah County Jail will be closing.
According to a news release from the Latah County Sheriff’s Office, the matter has not been discussed publicly, and no decision has been made.
The Latah County Jail was built in 1973 according to the standards of the day, which is nowhere close to current jail standards. Late this summer, the sheriff’s office was notified by the Moscow Fire Department of several issues regarding fire egress and fire suppression systems in the jail Jail. While some of the systems can be remedied at great taxpayer expense, there are several that cannot be repaired and as a result, could create a severe liability for Latah County as a whole.
According to the news release, the topic will be discussed publicly at the next Latah County Commissioners meeting on Tuesday, October 8.
