The city of Troy has issued a boil water advisory for its residents after E. coli bacteria was found in the city’s water supply last weekend.
According to a news release, the city is actively addressing the issue and anticipates resolving it within a few days. The city must receive two consecutive clear results before the boil water advisory can be lifted.
E. coli bacteria were found in the water supply on Saturday. The bacteria can make people sick, and are especially a concern for people with weakened immune systems. Common symptoms include diarrhea, cramps, nausea, headaches or other gastrointestinal issues.
According to the city, bacterial contamination can occur when increased run-off enters the drinking water source. It can also happen due to a break in the distribution system (pipes) or a failure in the water treatment process.
Residents are advised not to drink water without boiling it for at least one minute. Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, food preparation, brushing teeth, making ice and washing dishes.
The city will update residents when the issue is resolved.
