
Highland Elementary in Clarkston was briefly locked down around 8:15 this (Wed) morning after receiving a report of a parent being seen carrying a firearm while dropping off their child.
Law enforcement was immediately contacted, and an officer promptly arrived on the scene. The parent was located across the street from school property, where it is legally permissible to carry a firearm. As a precautionary measure, Highland Elementary was placed in a temporary lockdown which lasted approximately five minutes.
According to a news release from the Clarkston School District, a School Resource Officer spoke with the parent to address the situation and emphasized the seriousness, especially given the current context. The parent was cooperative and understood the concerns raised.
School District officials say that at no time was the safety of students or staff at risk, and officials will continue to work closely with law enforcement to ensure the security of the Clarkston School District community.
