COEUR D’ALENE, ID – A 34-year-old Lewiston man was arrested by Coeur d’Alene Police early yesterday afternoon on a felony warrant following a standoff with SWAT officers. Ryan Glenn Covey was also charged with Resisting and Obstructing Officers, the department says.
According to records, Covey is also known to reside in the Plummer area and was arrested in early January on charges of Felony Operating a Motor Vehicle Under the Influence of Alcohol (two or more convictions within 10 years), Misdemeanor Driving Without Privileges, Obstructing an Officer, and Open Container.
According to the police, at approximately 12:30 p.m., officers were contacted about Covey’s location in the 2300 block of West Suzanne Road.
“The information provided indicated Covey was in the Riverstone area and a witness saw him enter a portable restroom near the Atlas Waterfront Park. Officers arrived in the area and confirmed Covey was inside the restroom. Officers secured the area and began giving him commands. Covey was uncooperative and refused to come out,” officials say.
Covey had an active felony warrant for Domestic-related issues and Witness Intimidation.
“The Police Department was previously informed Covey has had access to weapons and was often armed. Out of an abundance of caution, SWAT officers were called to the scene to assist in taking Covey into custody. After the arrival of SWAT officers, Covey remained uncooperative and refused to exit the restroom,” the department says.
SWAT officers worked to persuade Covey to surrender peacefully.
“When that was unsuccessful, SWAT deployed OC gas into the restroom. Eventually Covey began to exit but he was not cooperative or responsive to commands and as a result a K9 was deployed. At that point, SWAT officers were able to take him into custody,” officials say.
Covey was taken to Kootenai Health for minor injuries before being transported to Kootenai County Public Safety Building where he was booked at around 9:08 p.m.
