SPOKANE, WA – The Community Health Association of Spokane, which is known as CHAS, will honor individuals who died while homeless this year at Homeless Memorial events in Lewiston and Spokane. This annual tradition brings local community partners together with those committed to ending homelessness to raise awareness of the struggles and humanity of those in our community without a home.

These events will include speakers from the homeless community and those committed to ending homelessness as well as a tribute to the 160 people who we know died this year while experiencing homelessness in our service area. Additionally, a visual representation of those members of our homeless community who have died this year with individual names placed on the fence outside the downtown CHAS Health Denny Murphy Clinic in Spokane, WA.
In an effort to assist those without a home in staying warm this winter, CHAS Health employees have donated more than $8,000 and warm winter gear including gloves, socks, and sleeping bags to support members of our homeless community through our employee Winter Survival Drive.

Communities across the nation hold similar memorial events on or near the Winter Solstice, the first day of winter and the longest night of the year, to bring attention to the tragedy of homelessness and to remember those who have died while living without a permanent home. Studies from countries around the world have confirmed a relationship between lack of housing and increased mortality rates.
