A Lewiston man has caught a new Idaho state record Coho Salmon.

According to an Idaho Fish and Game news release, Matt Hosking caught the coho that weighed 11.78 pounds while fishing the Clearwater River. The the 32.68-inch coho just beat the previous state record by 0.48 ounces.

Fish and Game officials say it’s the third year in a row where Idaho will see a strong return of coho salmon, with over 15,000 adults passing over Lower Granite Dam west of Clarkston. There has only been one other year where Idaho received a similar number of coho salmon.

The success of the Coho Salmon fishery in the Clearwater River has been a result of efforts by the Nez Perce Tribe, who began the program back in 1994.
