Eastern Washington U.S. Congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers helped pass the bipartisan Preserving Choice in Vehicle Purchases Act to prevent Governor Jay Inslee’s ban on purchasing future gas-powered vehicles in Washington state.

According to a press release from the Congresswoman, specifically, the legislation would block the Environmental Protection Agency from issuing waivers for regulations that ban the sale or use of new motor vehicles with internal combustion engines.

In August of 2022, California’s Air Resources Board voted to place restrictions on automakers that would essentially ban the sale of new internal combustion engine vehicles by 2035. 17 other states, including Washington, are set to follow California’s lead with the Washington Department of Ecology adopting the state’s standards in December 2022.
