STEPTOE, WA – Two motorcycle riders were injured in a collision with each other Sunday afternoon. According to a press release from the Whitman County Sheriff’s Office, deputies and EMS personnel responded to the crash near the entrance to Steptoe Butte State Park on Hume Road.

“Upon arrival, deputies located the involved drivers and their motorcycles off the roadway in a ditch on the side of the road. One of the injured motorcyclists appeared to have a broken arm and minor abrasions. The other motorcyclist had suspected head, back, and neck injuries, along with possible broken ribs and minor abrasions,” the press release says.

Based on initial findings, the two motorcycles were traveling in tandem when the driver of the outside bike turned into the driver of the inside motorcycle causing the collision. As a result, the drivers and their motorcycles ended up veering off the roadway into the ditch, officials say.

Forty-eight-year-old Ryan Martin of Moses Lake was transported via ambulance to Whitman Community Hospital in Colfax for treatment while 56-year-old Daniel Curtis of Ritzville was flown via Life Flight to Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane with serious injuries.

Both drivers were wearing helmets at the time of the collision.
