Port of Whitman County Receives $500,000 Grant from EPA

The Port of Whitman County reported receiving a $500,000 grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to identify and assess brownfield properties throughout Whitman County in partnership with interested property owners and communities.

According to the Whitman County Gazette, the EPA defines a brownfield as a property for which the potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant may complicate expansion, redevelopment, or reuse.

In a press release, the EPA Community-wide Assessment Grant Program has a performance period of up to four years and provides funding for communities beginning to address their brownfield challenges.
