MOSCOW, ID – A grand jury has indicted the man accused of killing four University of Idaho students in mid-November. Bryan Kohberger has been in the Latah County Jail since early January, charged with 1st-Degree Murder for the stabbing deaths of  Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Ethan Chapin, and Xana Kernodle.
According to KXLY, in Idaho, prosecutors need to prove there is enough evidence to hold someone over for trial, either through a grand jury indictment or a preliminary hearing. Kohberger has been on track for a preliminary hearing scheduled for late June, but the Latah County Court Clerk confirmed today the indictment was handed up this week and makes the preliminary hearing unnecessary.
Steve Goncalves, Kaylee’s father, released a statement following news of the indictment. He said, “We are just grateful another step in the process has been completed and we believe this was the best option for the circumstances.”

New filings are now available to view in State v. Kohberger, including an indictment and an updated courtroom conduct order.

From the Idaho State Judicial Branch:

district court arraignment hearing is now set for 9 a.m. PT on Monday, May 22. The hearing will take place at the Latah County Courthouse in Moscow, Idaho, and will be open to the public.

With the indictment and the arraignment hearing, the case now moves to the district court. The indictment is an alternate process to the preliminary hearing previously scheduled in June for this case; as such, that preliminary hearing will no longer take place. Information on Idaho trial court processes, including preliminary hearings and indictments, can be found in our media guide online.

Hearings are also scheduled Monday at 10 and 11 a.m. PT regarding other pending motions in this case. These hearings were previously scheduled and are currently set to take place remotely through videoconferencing. Information on accessing the hearings is available through the hearing notices posted to the Cases of Interest page.
