LEWISTON, ID – The (RV) Lewis-Clark Women’s Golf team swept the top four spots and ran away with the team victory while the No. 16 men’s squad won by 25 strokes at the LCSC Warrior Spring Invitational at the Lewiston Golf and Country Club on Tuesday.
“It was a fun time hosting the LCSC Warrior Spring Invite,” coach Zach Anderson said. “I am super proud of the two teams’ accomplishments. We will continue to put in the work and hopefully see more results like these.”
The Warriors took home both medalist positions with senior Alexandra Schmidt winning on the women’s side and senior Jorgen Lie Viken taking home the men’s crown.
The LC State women cruised to an 87-stroke win over second place North Idaho College and took the top four spots on the individual leaderboard.
“Definitely a great tournament and good to see the girls come out as winners,” Anderson said.
Schmidt shot an even-par 72 on her final round to finish the tournament at 1-under, seven strokes better than second place and teammate junior Deana Caruso.
Junior Kyla Currie shot 12-strokes better in her round over yesterday and catapulted into third. Currie used an eagle on No. 2 to help finish her final round with a 1-over 73. Freshman Dallis Shockey shot an 84 final round to complete the top-four sweep for the Warriors.
“The girls played great,” Anderson said. “Kyla came back in a massive way, proud of the way she battled back.”
The men improved their lead, shooting six strokes better than second place North Idaho College on the day to win by a comfortable 25 strokes.
“The guys went out and shot under par again with a 283,” Anderson said. “It was pretty solid all 54 holes. It helps playing at your home course, but they kept the mentality the same.”
Viken entered the final round in a tie with teammate Bryden Brown. Birdies on Nos. 2, 5 and 6 gave the senior the lead. A bogey on No. 7 slowed him down but a strong back nine with birdies on Nos. 12, 13 and 18 closed out a 4-under 68 and a two-shot victory.
Senior Devon Caruso, last year’s medalist hit three straight birdies on Nos. 4, 5 and 6 and carded an eagle on No. 14 to shoot a 70 and finish in a tie for third.
Co-leader after the first day, Brown, struggled in his round. The freshman shot a 5-over 77 which was good enough for a tie for sixth. Juniors Jacob Waller (9th) and Juan Pablo Quisoboni (T-10th) also finished in the top ten.
“Jacob stepped in last second and came up big for us,” Anderson said. “Devon finally got it going today and Jorgen dug deep on the back nine.”
