HENDERSON, NV – Jorgen Lie Viken completed a top-five finish as (RV) Lewis-Clark State Men’s Golf won the RMC Intercollegiate tournament at Reflection Bay Golf Club. The women finished in a tie for third.
“What a day,” LC coach Zach Anderson said. “That’s a win for the men and big top three for the women.”
The Warriors led after the opening round and never lost their lead as they finished with an 11-stroke advantage over second-place No. 13 UBC.
The rest of the top five were filled by currently ranked teams. No. 22 Victoria (B.C.) finished 14 strokes back in third, No. 15 The Master’s (Calif.) finished fourth and No. 10 10 Rocky Mountain (Mont.) ended up in the fifth spot.
“The men battled from the start,” Anderson added. “Adversity hit early in the round, but the guys fought hard and ground all the way to the end. Beating multiple top-15 teams should really help our ranking.”
Viken bounced back from a triple-bogey on No. 7 with birdies on Nos. 9 and 11 to finish in fourth place with a 2-under 214 to place five strokes behind UBC Okanagan golfer Justin Towill. The senior was one of only five golfers to finish the tournament under par.
Juan Pablo Quisoboni shot his best round of the tournament with an even-72 to move up into a tie for 10th. Freshman Bryden Brown completed a solid opening tournament in his Warrior career with a T-13 finish after shooting 74 on the final day.
For the third straight round the (RV) Warrior Women’s Golf team tied with No. 15 Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) to stay deadlocked in third, 39 strokes behind the winning team in No. 1 British Columbia. UBC Okanagan finished second, 27 strokes behind the winner.
“The girls had a goal today and achieved it,” Anderson said. “They stayed focused and stuck to their plan. It was pretty windy toward the second half of the round, and they battled through it.”
Deana Caruso shot a 9-over 81 to complete a T10 finish. Alexandra Schmidt finished with a second straight round of 79 to finish in 16th place.
Freshman Kylee Hughes had her best four-hole stretch of the tournament when she birdied Nos. 1, 3, and 4 en route to a 23rd-place finish.
“Both of these teams showed heart this week and I couldn’t be happier with the outcomes,” Anderson said.
